CAL FIRE/Riverside County Firefighters with assistance by San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of stranded transients on an island in the Santa Ana river bottom. Firefighters arrived to find the river flowing bank to bank at about 15 miles per hour with debris. Due to the danger of the rescue situation and the need for the closest helicopter with rescue capability. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office Copter 40K1 was dispatched to the scene and performed an internal load rescue, where they were able to land on the island and rescue two stranded and unharmed transients without incident.
