Current Situation

[Update 5/21/19 9:00 PM] Two engines and one water tender will remain on scene throughout the night. Resource commitment will be re-evaluated tomorrow. [Update 5/21/19 7:30 PM] Resources will remain committed until around 10:00 PM, and then re-evaluated for release. [Update 5/21/19 3:34 PM] Excessive winds are flaring up hot spots within the containment lines of the fire. Additional resources have been requested to assist in trying to keep the flare ups within the containment lines. Resources are expected to remain committed approximately four or more hours. [Update 5/21/19 10:26 AM] The fire was 100% contained to 130 acres at 6:18 PM. Firefighters will remain on scene for mop-up. [Update 5/20/19 7:02 PM] The fire remains at 130 acres and is now 90% contained. Resources will remain on scene working to fully contain the fire. [Update 05/20/2019 6:30 AM] Fire remains 130 acres and is now 60% contained. A day assignment of 11 engines, one water tender and one patrol continue work to fully contain the fire. [Update 6:15 PM]: Fire is 130 acres and now 25% contained. Forward progress stopped. High winds and blowing dust/sand hampering containment efforts. 1 firefighter w/non-life threatening injuries. Next update 5/20 unless major activity overnight dictates otherwise. Update 11:30 a.m.: Machinery used for mulching was destroyed in the fire, estimated loss of $1M. Update 9:00 a.m.: The fire is currently 135 acres and 5% contained. Today's day assignment includes 20 engines, two water tenders and one dozer. Resources will remain at scene throughout the day as they work to fully contain the fire. No injuries reported. Update 05/19/2019 1:45 AM: Fire is now approximately 130 acres and 0% contained. Portions of the fire are burning on the Thermal Airport property. Air operations have been temporarily suspended. Additional updates will be posted as information becomes available. CAL FIRE/Riverside County Firefighters with assistance by several agencies are on scene of a vegetation fire at Airport Boulevard and Shady Lane. The fire approximately 10 acres with multiple spot fires. Winds are from the northwest at 10-15 MPH. Additional resources are responding . Updates will be posted as information becomes available.
