The land for Sun City Fire Station 7 was donated to the County by the Del
Webb Corporation. Construction of the fire station was contracted
out at a cost of $65,000. Captain Terry Schmutz and Engineer Don
Feely did several months of public relations prior to the opening of the
station on January 27, 1972. The Sun City Volunteer Company was
established on December 14, 1971 with 28 people signing up for
membership. The volunteer company was comprised mostly of men over
60 years of age. These new volunteers were not trained in fire
suppression, but in communications, fire prevention, crowd control and
public relations. A specific number of 5 volunteers would be trained
in fire suppresion and be identified as Fire Control Corps.
Some of the fire engines that have been assigned to the
station include a 1976 International Loadstar, a 1980 Crown, a 1985 Spartan Van
Pelt, a 1991 E-One and a 2001 HME Westates. The vounteer
company placed its first squad into service in 1973. It was a 1973 Chevrolet
crew cab pickup with a utility body donated by the local Chevrolet
dealer.
