Earthquake Preparedness

On average, a damaging earthquake strikes somewhere in California every two years. Since 1987, however, Southern California alone has been hit by at least nine damaging earthquakes. Riverside County has suffered damage as the result of several significant local earthquakes. Some of these include:

March 25, 1937 San Jacinto Earthquake, magnitude 6.0
• December 4, 1948 Desert Hot Springs Earthquake, magnitude 6.0
• April 9, 1968 Borrego Mountain Earthquake, magnitude 6.5
• July 8, 1986 North Palm Springs Earthquake, magnitude 5.9
• April 22, 1992 Joshua Tree Earthquake, magnitude 6.1
• June 28, 1992 Landers Earthquake, magnitude 7.3
• June 28, 1992 Big Bear Earthquake, magnitude 6.3
• October 16, 1999 Hector Mine Earthquake, magnitude 7.1
