When firefighters are on the firelines for days at a time, do they
get to eat?
Firefighters do indeed eat while working on a fire. During the
initial stages of a major fire, firefighters rely on the rations they carry on the fire engine.
Once the logistical section for the incident begins operation, the food unit makes sure food is
produced and available for the firefighters. Tyipically, a mobile kitchen is brought to the
incident base to prepare and serve breakfast and dinner. Meals must contain at least 2000
calories.
Sack lunches are produced by vendors and are delivered to the
firefighters or are picked up from the incident base. The photos show a typical sack lunch: Two
drinks, two sandwiches, fruit, chips, cookies, cereal bar, candy, gum, and a condiment
pack.
